Intel has submitted pull requests to add support for its Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) technology to Valve's Proton compatibility layer, according to PC Gamer. The pull requests target Proton, Wine, VKD3D-Proton, and DXVK, aiming to enable Intel Arc GPUs to use their dedicated XMX engines for XeSS upscaling on Linux systems.

The changes would add a libxess.dll runtime built into Wine to forward Direct3D12 XeSS calls to the native Linux XeSS library (libxess.so). Proton will search for a suitable native Linux XeSS library and use it only if its version meets or exceeds the game's requirement.

The four pull requests are still being reviewed, so no release date is confirmed.
